Tens Unit

At Southern Palms Chiropractic and Wellness, Dr. Shaneen Brown is proud to offer the Spartanburg, SC, community holistic and alternative chiropractic care including treatments using a TENS unit.

What Is a TENS Unit?

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. A TENS unit or machine is a device used by chiropractors, physical therapists, and other musculoskeletal experts to offer pain relief.

The machine itself is compact, battery-operated, and connected to wires and electrode pads. The machine emits a mild electrical current that is transmitted to the body through the electrodes, which are placed directly on your skin.

What to Expect from a TENS Treatment

A TENS treatment falls under the category of electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) therapy. This treatment is designed to relieve pain and relax muscles by activating the peripheral nerves. The process creates tiny contractions in the muscles so they start to tire and relax, relieving muscle spasms and providing pain relief. Simultaneously, it stimulates the body’s natural production of endorphins, which also act as painkillers.

At a TENS therapy appointment, Dr. Brown will place electrodes strategically and directly on the skin of the affected area, allowing the current to be transmitted directly into the muscle or soft tissues. Initially, the feeling of electrical pulses will be very gentle, and Dr. Brown will ask you if you are comfortable as she adjusts the current strength using a dial on the unit to suit you and achieve desirable results. A session may last anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes depending on the current intensity.

What Is TENS Therapy Used For?

Dr. Brown at Southern Palms Chiropractic and Wellness serving Spartanburg, SC, uses a TENS unit for several conditions including:

  • Arthritis
  • Period pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Chronic pain
  • Knee pain and sports injuries

The primary benefit of TENS therapy is short-term pain relief. However, it also pairs well as part of a holistic health regime and may complement a more traditional treatment model.

TENS therapy is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant patients, patients with a pacemaker, people with epilepsy, and those with a cochlear implant are advised against TENS treatment.
